From the Principal’s Desk – 14 March 2019
On Friday the 1st of March, Helderberg International School once again supported “Operation Smile” and what a spectacular day it was! Thank you to each and everyone involved for helping make this day such a success. It was wonderful to see everyone having such a fun day, filled with lots of slides and smiles and all in aid of this very worth cause.
Weekly Thought: Investment of Humanity
Open your eyes and look for some man, or some work for the sake of men, which needs a little time, a little friendship, a little sympathy, a little sociability, a little human toil….It is needed in every nook and corner. Therefore search and see if there is not some place where you may invest your humanity.” – Albert Schweitzer
There is need all around us – and it’s not just for money! People need sound advice; an ear just to listen; a gentle hand to assist; a mentor to guide; someone to just share a drink with (be it coffee or a glass of wine); a voice to encourage and console; a warm meal.
That there are needs all around us is a simple reality; but are we awake to them? Schweitzer’s words: “Open your eyes” depict the “sleeping” state that many of us are in when it comes to noticing and meeting the needs of our fellow humans and can easily be paraphrased as: “Wake up!” We need not search far and wide to meet the needs of distant strangers but will find needs to meet in the lives of those nearest to us: Our spouse, parents, children, co-workers and friends. A service we may consider as nothing or meaningless could go a long way in changing someone else’s life…
Shall we resolve to be a little more “awake” to the needs that surround us? And like with so many things in life, let’s not wait for others to initiate the change – we can do so right now where we are!
Have a wonderful weekend in the knowledge that you are special…
